You Can Play Project

You Can Play is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation and/or gender identity. You Can Play works to guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete, judged by other athletes and fans alike, and only by what they contribute to the sport or their team’s success. You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete’s skills, work ethic and competitive spirit. Jennifer has been working on this project which was first initiated by Dr. Joyce Barrett.

PFLAG Peterborough Storefront Decorating for PRIDE

Catherine and Dianne initiated the PFLAG Peterborough Storefront Decorating Contest for PRIDE in 2013. Camp fYrefly

Camp FyreflyCatherine and Dianne have attended several task force meetings at Trent University where Camp fYrefly wants to set up in the Summer of 2017.
Camp fYrefly is a four-day individual/social learning and leadership camp that provides a safe and supportive environment where youth across differences in sexual orientation and gender identity can enhance their personal and social resilience. Camp fYrefly started in Edmonton in 2004. The camp expanded to Saskatchewan in 2009, alternating annually between Saskatoon and Regina. The Calgary camp started in 2013. Now Camp fYrefly is coming to Ontario in Summer 2017. Dr. Spencer J. Harrison is Camp Director for the Ontario camp, which is a joint venture of the School of Education & Professional Learning, Trent University and the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services, University of Alberta. The fYrefly acronym stands for fostering, youth, resilience, energy, fun, leadership, yeah!

Peterborough Public Library Display Window

Library windowIn 2015, for PRIDE, Gay suggested we book the Peterborough Public Library's main entrance display window. She with the PFLAG Team's support got PRIDE Week off to a great start. The display included an LGBTQ 'diversity' of library books both fiction and non-fiction, the evolution of PFLAG from its beginning in New York City, and reference to the work of labour unions in equal rights and to our 2014 Storefront Decorating 4 PRIDE winner.

Our LGBTQ Seniors

PFLAG Durham Region addressed the care of elder LGBTQ persons in nursing homes and retirement residences at a series of presentations in 2015. Our PFLAG team researched Peterborough seniors homes and found many contacts excited about bringing an awareness to PSWs, staff and administration about the special needs of our LGBTQ seniors. Gay and Jennifer are supported by the PFLAG Peterborough Team and are working with Elder Abuse Ontario and other local organizations towards this goal.

Information Tables

Information Table Information tables are one of the fundamental ways we bring awareness and inclusivity to the families, friends, and members of LGBTQ Peterborough.
We will set up and distribute our pamphlets and cards at Curve Lake First Nations Health Fair, drop-in centres, KPRDSB Egale Diversity Conference, Fleming College Health Fair, reframe International Film Festival, workshops, and every where we are invited. Helping at info tables is a great way to get to know PFLAG.
